It Sounds Funny But I’ll Say it Anyway

Up until the last minute, I hadn’t any idea that I would end up going to the Eraserheads reunion concert. I had purposely left myself out of the mad scramble for tickets and the clamor for VIP passes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan. They did after all provide a sizable portion of the soundtrack to my high school and college life. I guess for me that was more than enough, to keep them in the realm of nostalgia. What I hadn’t banked on was how much bigger a fan my wife was. Busy as she was, wind of the concert eventually reached her, so at around midnight, the first few minutes of the date of the concert, I found myself trying to get decent tickets to what I predicted to be a mammoth event. I asked my good friend Juned if he could get me in but alas, he’s given away the last of his free passes. I called and texted friends asking much of the same to no avail. I then hurried home to get some sleep as I intended to be at a ticketworld outlet at the soonest possible time.

I woke up late in the afternoon and panicked my way to National Bookstore in ATC, stood in line anxiously and after over an hour had in my hands 2 patron tickets. I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing full well that my sex life was no longer in jeopardy. I rushed home to find my wife practically ready. I showered and got dressed and we were off.

Finding parking turned out to be a bit of a battle. Even my incredible driving skills were tested to near its limits, something which rarely ever happens. After 45 minutes of fighting traffic, I eventually found us a spot. Not the most ideal, no where near close, but ultimately acceptable. The walk to the Fort open field from Serendra wasn’t so bad but felt a bit like an exodus of sorts as we were walking with a throng of people. Considering that we were already late and a majority of the people ought to be already inside the venue, I could predict that the place would be packed to ridiculous extremes.

I was right. When we got in, it became apparent that although we bought the most expensive tickets available to the public, the stage would be damn near impossible to see. It didn’t help that the stage was set up horribly. The SVIP and VIP sections had an unimpeded view of the event, but they set up the control tower front and center of the patron sections. I could not even imagine what the people in the general admission section could see, that is if they could see anything at all save for the monitors set up all over the place. Monitors that in my mind at least, were a poor substitute to seeing them play on the stage, presumably for the very last time. The least they could have done was set up the patron sections at the wings, moved up the general admission section and placed the control tower behind it. Jen and I found a fairly comfortable spot on the left side of our section, with a decent enough view. There we ran into our good friend Koryn as well as a small contingent of her friends. We also found Helga and Drew and we pretty much stuck together.

It goes without saying that it was hot. And because I am a big fat bald guy, I was perspiring more than what would be considered comfortable. Standing in line to get this weird tasting vitamin water took nearly forever. I was parched, I was hungry and I seriously wondered if I was in fact too damn old for this shit. Put simply I was getting quite rightfully pissed. I observed that I was hardly the only one.

Suddenly, the screens displayed a timer reading 20:00 that started counting down. Immediately, the atmosphere changed, the crowd was no longer restless. A curious energy could be felt, like static electricity building up. The hair on the back of my neck started to bristle. When the timer hit 00:00, the place went black, the crowd screamed and then, They began…

“May….isang umaga….lahat tayo…”

And we all fell silent. And I will not be ashamed to admit that as I relished the assault of memories from my youth, I found myself tearing up a bit. I was caught off guard, overwhelmed both by nostalgia and by the moment. And with that, everything was forgiven. Everything I had to go through until that point was suddenly worth it. I wouldn’t have been anywhere else but there. And that was how it was for the rest of the set. They sang Ligaya, Sembreak, Hey Jay, Harana, Fruitcake, Toyang, Kama Supra, Kailan, Wag Kang Matakot, Kaliwete, With A Smile, Shake Yer Head, my personal favorite Wag Mo Nang Itanong and Lightyears. For a little over an hour, it was the 90s all over again. It was funny how genuinely happy I felt then. And it was obvious that I wasn’t the only one.

So the end was anti-climactic. By now you know that after their first set, they took what was supposed to be a 10 minute break before they finally rocked our faces off with the final set to end all final sets. But that didn’t happen. Ely Buendia’s health could not let him continue and he had to be rushed to the hospital. The crowd was stunned. For several minutes we just stood there. Finally, we regained enough sense to head back to the car. The wife has posted an insider account of what the second set would have been like. And it feels as if we’ve been robbed. Not just us fans, but the band more than anyone. Last hurrahs should never end with a whimper. Which only leads me to believe that one more night is in order. As soon as Ely can safely handle the rigors of the stage, that second set should push through. This epic cannot end any other way.

Somehow, I feel it’s a fitting end. Not all legends cross the finish line. The way to the finish line is what’s important.

And that story will be the story we tell our kids and grand kids… and that concert will be remembered forever. Eheads = rock legends

Although, I do hope they do a reunion concert when ely’s fit and healthy again.
